AN INTRODUCTION TO
SKEET
"Keeping in Front"
How to shoot skeet with the "Maintained Lead Method"
ACKNOWLEDGMENT:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my coach, Max Weston. Without his help, patience and dedication to his pupils, I would not have enjoyed this wonderful sport of Skeet Shooting as much as I have. Thank you Max.
DEDICATION:
I dedicate this manual to my wife Julie and my dear departed son Paul Kenneth Travers. I would like to say how much I appreciate the number of times that you came to the gun club and pressed the "button" for me. Thank-you for the encouragement that you gave me, especially at the competitions. I know Paul that you are still watching me. From the bottom of my heart, thank-you both.
INTRODUCTION:
As this is an introduction to Skeet, it is not the "be all and end all" of skeet shooting. I do not profess to know all there is to know about the subject and I do not hit every target every time. I have shot a 96.4% average and I am currently an "A" grade shooter. And 50 straight is my maximum.
Then why did I write this manual? To help promote this wonderful sport. Yes it is a sport no matter what some people will try and tell you. I want every body to have a go at shooting skeet. And if you can be conversant with some of skeet’s finer point at the beginning then you will enjoy yourself and keep coming back for more, it is addictive.
I also wrote this manual. Because not everybody who has a go at skeet will have the benefit I did, being coached by Max Weston. I have tried to put in this manual what Max told me. When you first start shooting skeet, many people will want to help you, all with good intentions. Select someone who shoots the Maintained Lead Method ( ask the person you are considering to help you if they keep the barrels in front of the target at all times) and stick to that one person’s advice. All and sundry will give you different ideas, different leads, it will only confuse you and MAY upset the person you have selected to coach you. Politely listen to others advise, BUT stick to your "coach".
To purchase a book on Skeet Shooting is quite expensive, this manual is free. You may copy it and give it away to anyone else. Please, if you do, give them a copy of the entire manual, this is all I ask.
Skeet shooting will improve your concentration, eye to hand coordination and all round shooting skill for the field. ( I wish I knew about "lead" when I used to shot ducks I might have hit a few more).
As mentioned at the beginning of this introduction, this is not the "ALL" of sheet shooting, but I believe that if you follow the instructions in this short manual you will make it to "A" grade. How long it up to you shot once a month and it will take for ever, practice regularly and with conviction and you will make it.
I wish you all the best in your shooting career and hope to see you on the skeet field one day. Introduce your self to me and we will have a round together.
If you want to e-mail me feel free to do so, my address is ptravers@netspace.net.au If I can I will attempt to answer your questions, if I do not know the answer I will attempt to find it. Safe shooting.
